Indulge me whilst I play.

We bought our daughter a camera for Christmas. She was very specific on what her dream camera was, but as it seemed hugely expensive for such a small thing we hesitated. And then we bought it. When it arrived I charged it up (as there is nothing worse than getting something wonderful on Christmas morning and having to wait for it to charge). And I had a tiny little play with it. I shouldn't have been jealous but I coveted her camera.  And then I realised there was another model even more hugely expensive with a view finder. I dreamed, but dismissed it.
The moon tonight, no editing (I should have used a tripod or at least leaned against something)

And no one was more surprised than I when I found my husband had bought me the very camera. With my fibromyalgia I find carrying my camera even in my bag is getting more painful, so I have given up taking it places, even quilt shows. I have resorted to using my phone outside the house.

The old and the new, to show the size.

Yesterday we went to Symonds Yat on the Wye. These photos have not been edited. They were taken in the most harsh conditions for a camera. Bright bright sun low in the sky and the opposite bank in deep deep shade. Normally this causes either everything in the light gets bleached out or everything in the dark gets blacked out. Not with this baby, I am so happy with it!

That isn't snow over the river, just very thick frost. Those houses must be in the shade all day in winter.

And if you are tempted my new camera is the Sony RX100 M3 and my daughter has the Mark2.

This photo of the village was taken with hers on Boxing Day morning.
Did I mention it has a wide angle lens so I will be able to take full shots of quilts with them really close? I am very lucky.

Have a very happy 2015 every one of you!

  1. What fabulous photos you have shown us. Not only the subjects, which are gorgeous, but the photography is brilliant too. Lovely crisp edges on some, and slightly blurry ones where they should be indistinct. You have captured some truly beautiful scenery and the mood of the day as well.
I have a Canon which I bought some years ago. Initially I was happy with the photographs it took, but I am finding that very often these days I am not happy with the results. The colours are rarely true and the light is wrong somehow. Not being a good photographer in the first place, and then having my camera giving me worse and worse photos is frustrating.

    1. Dasha, is it possible that your Canon just needs servicing? I don't really know a lot about cameras, but it's a thought!

  2. Congratulations on your new camera. It's fun to see the photos from Symonds Yat with the snow and the ice. I was there on a sunny autumn day in September and know what you mean about the glare and the shadows. Your photos are a triumph.

  3. Very nice! Thank you for the camera review. I'm thinking of getting a new one, too.

  5. Oh surprises like that on Christmas are just the best, aren't they? Beautiful photos! Did you use any special settings for the photos?

I have a Nikon D-80 (I think...) and I do like it, but I'm not very good at using it. I tend to get better pictures out of my iPad or iPhone than I do out of the camera (and with much less frustration along the way), which just goes to show how little I know about using it properly!

  7. Great minds? I have the RX100 M2, my DH purchased it 2 years ago just when I needed to replace the little but nifty cybershot I had been using. I wanted a Canon because everyone said it was so easy to point and click but he went ahead and got the Sony anyway. I just don't have the patience to do anything with the dials and can't be bothered reading the book so I was always fiddling between A & S settings for photos, and was a bit overwhelmed with it - I really need simplicity.

But a few months ago at Quilts in the Barn I was told to put it on the green icon and now I couldn't be happier with it, it really does just snap excellent photos with zero effort from me. The green icon is my best friend now. And I know that's probably a waste of a camera this accomplished, but I'm just not technically minded enough to fiddle for each photo. I really love mine now. My only question - have you found a better download agent than the PMB?
