The dire quilt is looking better

It's amazing how this poorly designed quilt looks so much better with the addition of colour. If you are wondering what possessed me to ever buy such a beast, it was on sale at about £3-4 with backing binding and batting and I thought it would be a good piece to practise freemotion grid work on. The major problem was so much of the design element was either just a straight line or the motifs themselves were too close in proportion to the grid.
I'll just colour the outer border and I'll be done with it.

For a method to achieve this sort of effect Irena Bluhm's Quilt of Different Color is a good place to start.
